Slow winters

It's cold and rainy, now, and business at the store has converted from walk-ins to what I call "bulk buyers," those people who come in to buy five or six pints and take them home to curl up use as comfort food. We're also doing a *lot* of cake orders. I love making cakes; It is a very satisfying task.

I wish we could bring in more walk-in customers, though. I think about what other stores might do to get people to come in off the street, but I haven't come up with anything yet that works well. My store, as a PartnerShop, directly helps out the community around us, and while I wish that was enough to encourage people to come in, it looks like I am going to have to think up some neat tricks to get us through the slow winter season!

Training for the new employees is almost done. The amount of hours they all have is so small that I feel guilty, at times, for hiring new people, but we need the flexibilty that new blood provides when the more experienced employees run into scheduling conflicts. We currently have a great staff and they are very, very good at keeping the store clean, organized and presentable, plus interacting with customers in a positive way.

I will be at the New Orleans training conference, and I could not be more excited!
